These days capsule closets are becoming a very spoken about topic. Everyone wants to achieve the timeless look with all the right pieces. A capsule closet includes just a limited selection of pieces that fit each other and are interchangeable. This is a very easy task, all you need to do is decide a color scheme and style. With a capsule closet, you will be able to create many different outfits with simple pieces. And of course, the outfits can be suitable for any occasion.
What to buy
I created a quick guideline for the must haves. This is only to give an idea, and you can modify it or change it depending on your style, color preference, etc. This can still be a bit confusing for some, so I’ll break down each item category.
Blazers: If you ask for my opinion, blazers are the backbone to any closet, and honestly, any outfit. I recommend neutral tones, and if you want color, pastel is the safest to go. I’m only saying this because they are easier to style with other pieces, but of course this is all subjective.
Cardigans: They are cute items for the colder days, therefore, it is important to own just a couple, but that match with every outfit you could wear. Once again I am stressing the importance of color choice. If your closet is neutral, aim for neutral colors, while if it’s more bold, go wild with some vivid colors.
Bodysuits: They are super easy to style with anything, from jeans, to skirts, and more. With bodysuits you can change it up a bit. Play around with colors and designs. There is a lot to choose from, and when you find the perfect one that fits your closet, you’re all set.
Jackets and Coats: Now we talk about the important things. Here you can go in many ways. After all, there are many different weathers that jackets are needed for. Of course the closet above is not set for winter, therefore, the safest coat is always a trench coat. A leather jacket can also do no wrong, but if leather isn’t your thing, DENIM.
Skirts: Skirts are very easily partnered up with a crewneck to make it trendy and sporty, or a bodysuit to dress it up. Don’t buy a skirt because you just think it’s cute. Really think about it beforehand because it’s very easy to get distracted. Take a moment to brainstorm how you can style it, and with what items.
Jeans: If you’re like me, jeans are the go-to bottoms in my closet. I mean, they are comfortable and they go with everything. Blue, black, and white jeans are the way to go. They are colors that can perfectly go with any top and jacket.
Trousers: They are a great way to detach from jeans and add something a bit extra to the outfit. Dress pants are a great way to dress up and outfit, but also keeping it casual. There are many other versions of trousers that will add a lot to your closet.
Shoes: A shoe can make an outfit, they are very important. Imagine this. Wearing sneakers with a dress gives a dressed-down, trendy look. But, if you wear it with flats, it’s more dressed-up and elegant. You want to be sure you have a good variety for every style. Sandals, sneakers, and heels. There are many options that you can never go wrong with. Don’t forget about AF1 and Nike Dunks.
Bags: This one can be tricky. It’s difficult to find the perfect bag. Therefore, my tip is to buy a practical bag, so you can use it at work or university but still have it match the outfit. A second bag I recommend is an outing bag. Not too small but also not too little. It’s cute and can easily be your go-to. The last bag is a evening bag. It can be a clutch or just something smaller.
One last thing, because I know I had to remind myself while putting mine together, but more is not better. Only buy a couple items per category and aim for high quality products.
Outfits
Now, on to the next step. Having your fully completed capsule closet is only half the tasks. Don’t forget the whole point of a capsule wardrobe. From a simple collection of items, endless outfits can come out of it. To show you exactly what I mean, I created an outfit collage with all the items shown in the pieces above. Trust me, it’s a lot easier than you may think.
As you can see, the pieces can all be swapped and interchanged, and the only outcome you will have is a new outfit for every outing.
